The China Global Philanthropy Institute
(CGPI), based in Shenzhen, is China’s first independently registered institute
dedicated to philanthropy and social good. It was jointly initiated in 2015 by
five leading philanthropists: Ray Dalio, Bill Gates, Niu Gensheng, Ye Qingjun,
and He Qiaonü. Guided by its motto “Love and Benevolence,” CGPI envisions a society where philanthropy leads civilization
forward and is committed to cultivating visionary philanthropic leaders for
China and the world. Mr. Ma Weihua serves as Chair of the Board, and Chen
Hongshan is the Dean.
CGPI has assembled over 100 faculty members
and professors from prestigious universities and research institutions
worldwide, including Harvard University, Columbia University, Oxford
University, the University of Geneva, Tsinghua University, Peking University,
Renmin University of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Chinese
Academy of Social Sciences. The institute also maintains close partnerships
with international organizations such as UNICEF, UNDP, UN Women, the
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and World Animal
Protection.
Adhering to the principles of practice and
innovation, CGPI employs a teaching model that integrates “theory, practice,
and action.” Its core programs include the Executive Management in
Philanthropy (EMP), the Global Philanthropy Leaders (GPL) Program, and the
Philanthropy Online Academy (POA), supplemented by thematic courses,
certification programs, and scholarship initiatives. By the end of 2025, CGPI
had over 6,400 alumni and current students, including more than 1,700 from its
flagship programs, and over 84,000 registered online learners. Its alumni
network spans across China and more than 20 countries worldwide. Among them are
delegates to the National Congress of the Communist Party of China, members of
the National People’s Congress and the National Committee of the Chinese
People’s Political Consultative Conference, recipients of the China Youth May
Fourth Medal, national poverty alleviation award winners, chairs and CEOs of
listed companies, Olympic medalists, physicians honored with the Chinese
Medical Doctor Award, and grassroots practitioners dedicated to rural
revitalization, climate action, and services for orphans and people with
disabilities. Through the CGPI Alumni Development Council, alumni actively
collaborate, share resources, and foster a “community of cooperation.”
CGPI actively promotes collaboration
between Chinese and global philanthropists, enhances philanthropic innovation
and professionalism, and serves as a lever for economic transformation, social
development, and international exchange. On March 23, 2019, witnessed by the
leaders of China and Italy, CGPI, together with the China Development Research
Foundation and the China Center of the University of Turin, signed a Memorandum
of Understanding to establish the China-Italy Philanthropy Forum, which has
since become the highest-level philanthropic exchange between the two countries.
For a decade, CGPI has been building a holistic view of China’s philanthropic
ecosystem with a global perspective and a pragmatic approach.
