Celebrities from all walks of life on both sides of the Strait show up at the 2017 Compassion Award Ceremony

On December 13, 2017, the awards ceremony for the 12th"Compassion Award" was grandly held in Hong Kong under the auspices of Hong Kong, Macao Taiwan Charitable Foundation (or HMTCF for short) as primary sponsor and Phoenix Television as secondary sponsor.


The Compassion Award was awarded to Ma Weihua, Chairman of the Board of China Global Philanthropy Institute, who decided to donate all the prize money to his institute's Social Finance Center so that it may be mainly used to support the publication of China's first ever public welfare-centered finance textbook, promote the popularization of social finance ideas, and improve the capability and all-around quality of the Center's staff. In fact, his effort will play a vital role in promoting innovation in global social finance, perfecting the modern financial system, breaking through the social finance instrument, encouraging the idea of philanthropic economy, and directing the development of the philanthropic cause.

Among the major figures who appeared at the ceremony were Wang Zhenyao, President of China Global Philanthropy Institute; Liang Aishi, Chairman of the Final Award Winner Review Committee for the Compassion Award; Liu Changle, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Phoenix Television; Wang Wenyuan, President of Formosa Plastic Group; Wang Jianxuan, Founder of Xinhua Compassion Education Foundation; and Lin Cangsheng, Wu Xiuqi Culture & Education Foundation. These guests showed up and presided over the ceremony along with Lin Tianmao, Founder of the "Compassion Award" and Wu Xiaoli, Ambassador of the 2017 Compassion Ambassador.

Pioneer, advocate, and practitioner of philanthropic civilization, Ma Weihua is good at using his rich experience in banking reforms, advocate of philanthropic + financial ideas, who has cultivated a great many philanthropists in China. Served as president of the One Foundation for many years, accumulated rich experience in running philanthropic organizations, led multiple philanthropic organizations in developing steadily, helped more and more people in need. As a leader with strong corporate and philanthropic sentiments, he has been constructing the philanthropic knowledge system in recent years, improving the level of China's public welfare education, and enhancing international exchanges and cooperation in the fields of public welfare and philanthropy, with a view to fostering innovation and reforms in the global philanthropic cause.

Compassion figures from three places on both sides of the strait win awards and respect from all


On the site of the awards ceremony, three Chinese dialects, namely Cantonese, Mandarin, and Hokkien, could be heard everywhere, because from three places on both sides of the Taiwan Strait came the six award winners, which were Chong Chan Yau from Hong Kong, Kang Shuhua and Qiu Qingxi from Taiwan, and Ma Weihua, Gang Zi, and Yuan Cunquan from the Chinese mainland. These six award winners showed extraordinary leadership in the fields of philanthropy and public welfare, and performed touching compassionate deeds. As a result, they each were given $100,000 in prize money, which is higher than any sum given in recognition of compassion or philanthropic deeds in any Chinese-dominant region around the world. The winners will spend all the prize money enhancing public welfare, thereby keeping their spirit of love and compassion alive.

Liang Aishi, Chairman of the Final Award Winner Review Committee for the Compassion Award, said in her speech that a candidate had to go through three strict review steps, namely preliminary, secondary, and final, before he could become a winner of the Compassion Award; the review committee was composed of prominent figures from academic, political, business, and social circles on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and for any candidate to be chosen through the review steps, he had to be really good and worth his salt. It was exciting to be able to bear witness to the happiness the award winners felt as they came onto the stage to receive their awards and to listen to them describe their great aspirations for the public welfare plans. She said she was deeply touched.

Gang Zi


As Vice President of the Overseas Chinese Charity Foundation of China, Gang Zi hit on some innovative philanthropic and public welfare ideas, including the mode which caused a sensation in the field of philanthropy because it stressed that philanthropy be supported through business, and the initiative, also known as "Yi Qi Juan," which involved appealing to people to donate one yuan per person per day until over RMB 10 million was collected, thereby triggering a wave of philanthropy among the masses. In fact, his ideas and innovations have set in motion a small revolution in the field of philanthropy.

Yuan Cunquan


He became fully paralyzed 21 years ago. Because he received a great deal of help when he suffered, he decided to throw himself into the effort to improve public welfare and create compassion teams and set up philanthropic foundations. In the past 15 years, he has made over 240 efforts to help those in need of medical service or education. As his efforts, a total of RMB 2.4 million in money and material has been collected.


Chong Chan Yau


He lost his sight at the age of 6, and is now President of Hong Kong Blind Union. He did an excellent job when he served as an official and the director of a non-profit organization. In fact, he played an exemplary role and encouraged both the disabled and healthy to help those in need.


Kang Shuhua


She made the voices of former comfort women and other women in need heard; in fact, she spent a lot of time and energy helping former comfort women from Taiwan as well as women and children affected by domestic violence. She worked hard to help victims of violence committed by the opposite sex recover both physically and mentally.


Qiu Qingxi


He established the Life Reestablishing Association. In fact, he has been participating in all kinds of activities in the past 18 years; he has been donating 23 million Taiwan Dollars every year, or a grand total of over 400 million Taiwan Dollars.
