On January 12, 2017, The List of 2016 Top 100 Philanthropists of China (in short, The List of 2016) was formally released in Beijing by China Philanthropy Research Institute, Beijing Normal University (in short, CPRI) and Family Philanthropy Legacy Centre, China Global Philanthropy Institute (in short, CGPI).  The most generous donor in 2016 is MA Huateng (Pony Ma) since he pledged 100 million Tencent shares (worth 16.99 billion yuan) to charity.  With their separate over 1 billion yuan donations, CHEN Tianqiao and LUO Qianqian family, CHEN Yidan, LU Zhiqiang and XIONG Xinxiang rank top 5 on this list.

Moreover, since the list was initially issued once a year from 2011, WANG Jianlin, XU Jiayin and GU Runjin have been on this list for 6 consecutive years.  CHEN Jingwei, LU Zhiqiang and YANG Guoqiang also have been awarded for five years.  Furthermore, 66 donors showed up for the first time included XIONG Xinxiang.

New-generation Donors Appeared, Online Celebrity Papi is on the List

The emerging of younger and internet-featured donors is the noticeable highlight of 2016.  Apart from MA Huateng, CHEN Tianqiao and CHEN Yidan, the top 3 donors, other 10 awardees are all born after 1970 (such as ZHOU Jinting and LIU Qiangdong), 3 donors on the list born at 1980s such as JIANG Yilei (Papi), all of they are tightly relevant to internet.  Their philanthropic actions not only supported tradition areas like poverty alleviation, education development, and environment protection, they also paid closely attention to new sectors including culture and art, entrepreneurial innovation and advanced technology.  Those changes reflect conspicuous diversity and traits of time, and correspond with the idea of 'general philanthropy' advised by Charity Law.

The Total Amount of Donations Increased Again

According to The List of 2016, the amount of donations has achieved several enormous breakthroughs.  First, the total value of all donations on the list reached 37.9 billion yuan, hit a historical high since the list issued 6 years before.  Second, MA Huateng, the top 1 donator of The List of 2016, the value of donations he pledged to give in 2016 were larger than the donations that top donor MA Yun (Jack Ma) has in 2015.  Third, the number of donors who donated (or pledged) over 0.1 and 1 billion yuan, both increased than those in 2015, reaching 38 and 5 descriptively.  Lastly, the floor donation on The List of 2016 valued RMB 15 million and it became the highest floor donation than ever from 2011.

Guangdong Province and Real Estate Industry are Rich of Donors

From the perspective of distribution of geographic district and professional field, Guangdong ranked first in term of the number of donors (24 in 2016) with a total of 21.4 billion yuan.

As for the professional areas of philanthropists, while the field of real estate still kept its top place for 6 consecutive years, owning most awardees (32 in 2016), the internet industry dedicated the biggest contribution, 21.3 billion from 15 givers, accounting for over 56% of all donors and is 3.4 times as the value from real estate.

According to CHENG Fen, the List of 2016 issuer, director of Research Department of CPRI and vice-director of Philanthropy Research Centre of CGPI, there was an exciting leap on the total value of donation in 2016.  She believed, new-generation philanthropists headed by MA Huateng, CHEN Tianqiao and CHEN Yidan have shown their international scope and future consciousness, and they also have sufficient capital overseas to structure a more profoundly influential philanthropic framework.  Therefore, numbers of philanthropists started supporting cultural inheritance, educational innovation and advanced technologies including brain science, artificial intelligence and aerospace.  Those progressive philanthropists will lead the evolution of philanthropy in China.

The associated president of CGPI, Professor of Beijing Normal University, FU Changbo is the reviewer of The List of 2016 Top 100 Philanthropists of China.  He indicated that, China has experiencing a rapid growth for 40 years, a series of problem had posed against the society.  The settlement of those troubles demands the cooperation of government, enterprise and the third party.  The first China's Charity Law and a series of policies had been issued and carried out in 2016, guiding philanthropic ways where wealthy people can contribute to public welfare and participate in solving social problems.  The enormous breakthrough of increasing large donations is also accounting for the Charity Law.   He also added that, to introduce wealthy people to a philanthropic lifestyle and evaluate more and more foresight philanthropists for China, CPRI and CGPI would keep our efforts on issuing reports like The List of 2016 Top 100 Philanthropists of China and organising the training projects like 'Global Philanthropy Leaders Program'.
