From Mar. 21 to 24, 2019, invited by Sergio Mattarella, President of the Republic of Italy, Xi Jinping, Chairman of the People's Republic of China, paid a state visit to Italy for friendly exchange, which wrote a new chapter of comprehensive cooperation and drew a blueprint of future development.
In order to actively respond to the "Belt and Road" Initiative, strengthen non-governmental exchanges between the two countries, and promote the common development of philanthropy between the two countries, during the visit of Chairman Xi Jinping, the " China-Italy Philanthropy Forum" jointly sponsored by Shenzhen China Global Philanthropy Institute, China Development Research Foundation and UNITO China Research Center, Italy was formally established. On Mar. 22, East-West Philanthropists Summit of China-Italy Philanthropy Forum themed by "Innovation and Dialogue: Promoting China-Italy Philanthropy Cooperation and Cultivating Sustainable Social Capital" was successfully held in the Lincean Academy. On Mar. 23, witnessed by Chairman Xi Jinping and Giuseppe Conte, Prime Minister of Italy, Dean Wang Zhenyao officially signed a "Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of China-Italy Philanthropy Forum" with Fang Jin, Deputy Secretary General of China Development Research Foundation and Ouyang Qiao in charge of UNITO China Research Center, Italy, and reached a consensus on jointly promoting the future cooperation in the field of China-Italy philanthropy. The Memorandum became the only one in charity field of the 19 cooperative contracting projects witnessed by the leaders of the two countries. This also represents the highest level of charitable exchange activities in the history of the two countries.

2020 marks the 50thanniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Italy. During talks with Giuseppe Conte, Prime Minister of Italy, Chairman Xi Jinping pointed out that China-Italy relations were deeply rooted in the history of thousands of years of exchanges with profound public opinion foundation. Both sides shall always treat and grasp China-Italy relations from a strategic and long-term perspective. On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Italy and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Italy in 2020, they will jointly promote China-Italy relations to a new era, so that pragmatic cooperation results in all fields will better benefit people in these two countries.
The establishment of China-Italy Philanthropy Forum and the convening of East-West Philanthropists Summit of China-Italy Philanthropy Forum are gifts for the 50thanniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Italy through joint philanthropy action. Meanwhile, the Forum is also the result made through the constant concern and promotion by leaders of China and Italy. As early as May 2018, Romano Prodi, former Chairman of the European Commission and former Prime Minister of Italy, paid a visit to China Global Philanthropy Institute and attended the China-Italy Philanthropy Seminar. At the meeting, Mr. Prodi proposed that "philanthropy, like a bonding agent of society, is able to connect every part of society and create a stable environment. At the same time, countries can also cooperate on many aspects in the field of philanthropy". Under his active promotion, the Institute reached a consensus with China Development Research Foundation and UNITO China Research Center on future cooperation in the field of China-Italy philanthropy, which directly contributed to the establishment of China-Italy Philanthropy Forum.
East-West Philanthropy Circle was officially set up
On the evening of Mar. 22 (local time), Mr. Romano Prodi, Honorary Co-Chairman and Ma Weihua, Honorary Co-Chairman of China-Italy Philanthropy Forum were invited to attend the state banquet held by President Mattarella. Mr. Prodi mentioned at the summit that China-Italy Philanthropy Forum was an extension of cooperation between China and Italy and other countries in the world including the United States and Europe in the field of philanthropy, and a new field to expand East-West philanthropy cooperation based on the platform of East-West Philanthropy Forum.
