About CGPI

The China Global Philanthropy Institute is the first of its kind to be independently registered in China. The Institute adheres to the motto of “Love and Benevolence”, regarding benevolence as a master and loving the world. Its goal is to build a centennial institute, with the vision of leading social civilization by philanthropy and the mission of cultivating a global philanthropy model, and commit itself to the cultivation of philanthropic talents in China and the globe.

The Institute was launched in 2015 by a joint initiative of five Chinese and US philanthropists, Bill Gates, Ray Dalio, Niu Gensheng, He Qiaonyu and Ye Qingjun. Ma Weihua, former President of China Merchants Bank, is the institute’s first chairman of the board, and Wang Zhenyao, professor of the Beijing Normal University, is the first president. Its establishment is not only a pioneering work of global philanthropy, but also a model of cooperation between Chinese and American philanthropists.

The Institute builds a modern philanthropic knowledge system with “philanthropic knowledge” as the core, adopts the teaching mode of “theoretical instruction, practical guidance, and action first”, takes time and innovation as basic principles and develops a teaching model that focuses on the GPL, EMP and POA and is supplemented by the theme course, certification course and scholarship course, providing the Chinese philanthropy sector with the world-class learning platform and resources.

The Institute brings together more than 100 famous professors from Harvard University, Indiana University, Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Ford Foundation, and domestic and foreign philanthropy practitioners to teach and solve problems. It maintains close cooperative relationship with many agencies, such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Women, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the World Animal Protection (WAP), and the University of Hong Kong. The Institute has been established for nearly five years, and thousands of philanthropists and international philanthropy executives of the new era have been enrolled in its courses. At the same time, it has also provided professional improvement courses for more than 3,000 industry backbones, and over 50,000 students have registered at the Philanthropy Online Academy. The Institute’s more than 3,000 alumni come from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across China and 18 countries in Europe and America. Over one-third philanthropy cooperation between our alumni focuses on education, health, poverty alleviation, and environmental protection, and explores in emerging fields such as impact investment and international philanthropy development. Our alumni have gradually demonstrated world-class leadership and influence on the international stage.

Meanwhile, the Institute is also actively promoting joint actions between philanthropists from China and the world to enhance the innovation and specialization of philanthropy cause, play an important role in promoting economic transformation and social construction, and act as a bridge and link between international exchanges. During the five years since its establishment, the Institute has regular contacts and exchanges with the United States, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and Japan, and many dignitaries have visited us. On March 23, 2019, the Institute, the China Development Research Foundation, and the TOChina Hub of University of Torino formally initiated the China-Italy Philanthropy Forum, and signed the “Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of the China-Italy Philanthropy Forum” under the witness of the heads of two states. The China-Italy Philanthropy Forum has become the highest level philanthropy exchange activity in the history of the two countries.

The strength of a country depends on its talents; the growth and decline of talents depends on the school. The China Global Philanthropy Institute has always been committed to becoming a spiritual home that leads wealth for good and social progress, as well as a modern Whampoa Military Academy for the modern philanthropists’ and philanthropic professionals’ growth. The Institute takes advantage of being a platform, gathers global philanthropy leaders, and participates in discussions on global issues including sustainability, social impact investment, innovation in technology and philanthropy, and climate change; it takes the lead in making wealth for good, business for good, and people for good to build a better life, and contributes to the development of philanthropy in China and the world.
